Birthdays

A few years ago, whilst I was doing my training, I discovered how to make sure you weren't forgotten on your birthday.
I learnt that it was okay to tell people, to remind them, and left multiple entries in our diary at work.
On my birthday, that year, I received loads of cards (30 or more which is a lot for me) and felt incredibly stroked. I got two from Mark, and we weren't even together then, he was my boss. I put all the cards up on one wall, and it was so good to look at them and to feel so care for and loved.

REMEMBER, NO ONE HAD TO SEND A CARD, ONLY THOSE WHO WANTED TO, SO NO NEED TO THINK, OH WELL THEY ONLY SENT THEM COS I KEPT ON AND ON!!!

What I had learnt was this....quite often, we wait to be noticed, we wait to be remembered and secretly wish that people (friends, parents, siblings, partners etc) will remember without us telling them. What can often happen (especially if some of them are really poor at remembering) is that on the day, they have forgotten and feel bad, and we feel bad to have been forgotten. Why do we do this? Why do we risk being forgotten and feeling bad? Well, sometimes, we want to punish or be angry with the one's we love, and this is a good way to do it!

So, I now make sure I am not forgotten by those who I love and who love me.....and so I don't get to feel bad on my birthday. And of course, this is also about asking for what you need, rather than waiting and then being disappointed when you do't get it.

I think I was told by my mother, "Ask doesn't get!" Well, how the heck do you get what you want then??? Wait for someone with a working crystal ball to work it out?

To all those who have birthdays and all those who will do it differently next time.
