Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers

I have read many self help books and my favourite of all time is
'Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway' by Susan Jeffers.

For me this is the ultimate.

No matter how many times I read it I still go back to it for boosts when I am feeling low or 'put upon' and yet it is accessible at so many levels.

It does not ask for any special knowledge but yet it never talks down to anyone no matter what their prior level of understanding of the topic. I never fail to feel better having read a bit.

I must have bought about 10 copies of this so far as I am forever passing it on to people and rarely get it returned. When I do it is usually because someone has bought their own copy.

If you are only ever to buy one self help book let this be the one.

Don't try to read it all in one sitting - though I did the first time. Read a chapter and think about it. Try some of the things she suggests and when you feel it has sunk in. Go on to the next an so on.

There are many good books out there but this definitely has to be among the best.

Just ordered this on Amazon. I am reading Overcoming Low Self-Esteem by Melanie Fennell on the advice of my counsellor but only up to How Self Esteem developes, so a way to go yet.

I've got that one too and it is good but I prefer 'Feel the Fear', I found it more easy to read and make sense of. Let us know what you think when you have read a bit of both.

Just want to say I entirely agree with you Hec about Feel The Fear - it's definitely the best book of its sort that I've ever read. I've recommended it to loads of other people and bought copies of it for some people close to me who I felt would benefit from it. I can't praise it highly enough, and like you I often dip into it if things are getting on top of me.

I've read it recently and I was left wondering why this book is held in such regard I'm afraid. Could it be because I have read it last, after other self-help books have ripped it off?

Could you tell me why you think it is so good?

I think there are probably two reasons why you haven't found it great.

One is - as you said - you've read it after others many of which do say the same sort of thing in a different way. I have seen many books that use many of the same things now and certainly her follow up books are very much just the same thinked phrased in different ways.

The other is that I think that, on the whole, it appeals far more to women than men. Men (and I know I am generalising) tend to need scientific explanations and proof as to why things work before they will consider them whereas women need something that reassures their emotions. The book works on a co-operative way and is about fitting in and feeling comfortable which tends to appeal to women. Men are brought up to be more agressive and competitive and want to feel better than others. That is very extreme and simplified and doesn't cover everything I mean but I think it sort of explains why.

Another way of putting it might be to say when women understand why they are like they are it is the first step to changing things. It's often the being with and empathy with self that is difficult.

Men want to problem solve so they are looking for answers - for what to do as opposed to reasons and ways to be.

Not sure if this will make any sense to anyone else but I understand it

I had a copy of this years ago. I might try getting another one. From what I can remember it was really good.
