Food for thought, maybe...

I was given a piece of advice at the start of my Nursing career, 30 years ago now, but this quote from Maya Angelou sort of sums up what I was advised....

...I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.....

Even though I only joined yesterday ,I have already been made to feel welcome....I won't always say the right thing, and I won't always do the right thing but I hope that I always make people 'feel' welcome and supported.

So very true.

I am training on a course at the moment and 2 members are male who have not had a very good experience of education.  

It is hard convincing them - but so true - that they have a great deal to offer community work as they are such brilliant role models for youngsters.  They haven't had the best start in life but they are both such lovely warm, funny, caring people.  

One is bringing up 4 kids under 8 up on his own.  His written skills are poor but he always remembers what others have told him about themself and recalls it appropriately.  Whoever has had a minor detail remembered feels so cared about.

The other, is with a partner and between them they have 8 children.  She works and he is the stay at home partner.  He is always cheerful and unfailingly supportive of everyone else in the group.

I feel privileged to work with such wonderful people - they make me feel good because they care, and because the course is helping them to develop a healthier esteem and to have the confidence to develop a more active role within their community

I love Maya Angelou's quotes/autobiographies.  She is a strong woman that makes lots of sense.
