Back when I was working one to one with people and doing my training, I was also considering life coaching. This book was recommended by a psychotherapy colleague as a great "life coaching" and assertiveness skills book.
As usual, it was so good, I lent it to someone and now don't have it...however, I found these quotes when going through some stuff just now, and still like them,
| Quote: |
If I stand in the sand and draw a circle around myself, I am in my comfort zone. Now I step outside, and I feel fear and today I know that is a good place to be. When I stay there for a while, it becomes familiar and the fear subsides. Now I can draw a wider circle around myself and my comfort zone gets larger. Simon Woodroffe 2000 (Yo! Sushi) |

Make a list of the worst things that could possibly happen- you may find out that it is not as bad as you thought and you won't actually have to go back and live with your mum!SW 2000 (above) |
This last one is really useful when someone is not allowing themselves to know what they know.....I used it with Phil last night (although he talked over it, so really didn't want to know what he knew

Err the link apparently takes me to a Japanese cookbook! or is it the skills he used when setting up the business. Can't be sure from the write up?!?!?!?!
I like the quotes though when anyone has used the last one on me I have just found it very annoying - if I knew the answer I really wouldn't be asking - OK that might just be my defenses shouting BUT if it irritates me that much it aint gonna work _________________ “You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have roses.”

Yes, it is about how he set up Yo Sushi, and full of useful, motivating, entrepreneurial stuff (blimey, did I just spell that correctly ).
Yes, it obviously is a defended area for you if it is so irritating. Another way to say the same thing is,
"If you had to guess, what might you guess?"...does that irritate as much?

That's probably better for me.
The other one is what would 'x' say? X being someone I respect in that area. I also use that one with coaching clients more than the other. Not because I don't believe the other works - but it's hard to use it with confidence when it's not working for me! _________________ “You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have roses.”

Oh yes, that's a good one. I used it alot when I was finding my feet in the Day Hospital. I took over a Women's Group and several clients from a highly regarded colleague (highly regarded by me, her colleagues and her clients). So, whilst I was still getting to know the clients, and/or if I got stuck (I was in the 1st year of my training then)...I would say,
"What would A have suggested/thought/said?" It worked so well
